Who We Help and How to Make a Referral

Who We Help

We provide consultations regarding genetic conditions that affect individuals throughout the lifespan. We offer supportive counseling for families, couples, and individuals to address their questions and concerns. When appropriate, we assist with the coordination of chromosome and DNA testing for various genetic conditions.

Those who may benefit from genetic counseling include:

  • Individuals with a personal or family history of:
    • a known genetic condition, or symptoms suggestive of a genetic condition (such as Down syndrome, Huntington disease, cystic fibrosis, or muscular dystrophy)
    • a birth defect (such as cleft lip or palate, congenital heart defects, spina bifida, short stature, or hearing or visual disabilities)
    • developmental delay, autism, or cognitive disabilities
  • Individuals with a strong family history of cancer, an early age of cancer diagnosis, a known hereditary cancer condition in the family, or those who are identified to be at a higher risk for a hereditary cancer condition by their healthcare providers
  • Individuals whose personal health history or family health history suggests a risk for hereditary cardiac, psychiatric, muscular or neurological disease, among others
  • Pregnant women whose ultrasound or prenatal testing suggest an increased risk of pregnancy complications, a genetic condition, or a birth defect
  • Women or couples with questions regarding medications, drugs, infections, or other exposures that may be harmful during pregnancy
  • Women or couples who have had a history of infertility, multiple miscarriages, stillbirth, or early infant death
  • Women or couples planning a future pregnancy who wish to evaluate personal health, fertility, and/or possible inherited risks

Referrals

Referrals may be made by any healthcare provider, or an individual or family can refer themselves. If it is determined that a patient would benefit by having genetic testing, a signed referral by a Provider will be required to authorize testing.  Summary letters are sent to the patient and their provider after the session. Fees for counseling sessions can be discussed before the appointment. Please contact us to discuss a referral.
